Law firm answering services: what they cost and what to check

A missed call at a law firm is usually a lost client. People looking for a lawyer tend to call the next firm on the list rather than leave a voicemail, and the cases that matter most, an arrest, an accident, a deadline, rarely happen during office hours.

What to check before you sign

  1. Intake that follows your scriptPractice area, how they found you, the facts you need to run a conflict check, and how urgent it is. Ask to see a sample intake record before you sign.
  2. Your practice management softwareClio, MyCase, PracticePanther or Lawmatics, so new leads arrive as records instead of emails someone retypes.
  3. Spanish, if your clients speak itPersonal injury, immigration and family practices lose callers who cannot be served in their language.
  4. Warm transfer for real emergenciesA new arrest or a client calling about a court deadline should reach a person, not a message queue.
  5. No legal advice, everAsk how receptionists, human or AI, handle a distressed caller who pushes for an opinion.

Questions law firms ask

Do law firms need a legal-specific answering service?

Not necessarily. What matters is intake quality and how leads reach your practice management software. Legal-focused services usually arrive with intake scripts and integrations ready; a general service can do the same work if you write the script and connect the software.

Can an AI receptionist handle legal intake?

It can collect structured facts such as name, matter type, dates and contact details, and book a consultation. It should not assess a case. Test how it handles an upset caller before you rely on it after hours.

How much does an answering service cost for a law firm?

Of the 22 services in this directory that say they serve law firms, live and hybrid plans start at $30 a month and AI plans at $29. What you actually pay depends on minutes or calls used, overage rates and setup fees, which is why the table estimates a monthly total at your volume.

Prices and features are read from each provider’s own website and dated. They change; check the provider before you sign. Nobody pays to be listed here, and there are no affiliate links.

Building or fixing the website itself? Law firms: what a good website needs.

Your answering service is only half of it.

I don’t sell answering services. I build the parts around them for law firms: a website that books appointments by itself, the connection that drops each call into your CRM or practice software, and AI assistants that answer the same questions in text.
