Imposter is a free word party game for 3 to 20 players. Each round, everyone gets the same secret word except the imposter. Players take turns giving a short clue, talk it over, then vote on who they think is bluffing. If the imposter gets caught, they still have one chance to win by guessing the word.
Play on one phone that you pass around the room, or open an online room so everyone can join from their own phone, even over a video call. It works for family game nights, classrooms, parties and team events, and there is nothing to download or sign up for.
How a round works
- Deal the rolesThe app picks a secret word from your chosen packs. Everyone sees it in private except the imposter. On one phone, each player taps to reveal, then passes the phone on.
- Give cluesA random player starts and clues go around in order. Give one word or a short phrase that shows you know the word, without saying it or making it too obvious.
- DiscussTalk it over before the timer runs out. Whose clue felt off? Who hesitated? The imposter tries to blend in and steer suspicion somewhere else.
- VoteEveryone votes for the player they think is the imposter, and you cannot vote for yourself. The player with the most votes is accused. A tie means nobody is.
- Last chanceIf the accused player is an imposter, they get one guess at the secret word. A wrong guess means the crew wins and each crewmate scores 1 point. Otherwise the imposters win and score 2 points each.
Two ways to play
Pass & Play
One phone for 3 to 20 players. Set up the game, then pass the phone around so each player can tap to see their role in private. Clues and discussion happen out loud, right there in the room.
Online room
Everyone plays on their own phone, with 3 to 16 players per room. The host shares a 4-letter code, a link or a QR code. Say clues out loud or type them in the app, so it works over Zoom, FaceTime or Discord too.
20 word packs, 1,976 words
Pick one pack or mix several. Every list is on its own page if you want to read the words first.
Or play with questions
In Questions mode everyone answers a secret question, but the imposter got a slightly different one. Their answer usually sounds fine until the real question is revealed. There are 120 question pairs built in. See the question pairs.
Questions people ask
Is the Imposter game free?
Yes. Imposter is free to play, with no sign-up and no account. It is made by Pixel & Oak Games and inspired by classic word and social-deduction party games.
Do I need to download an app?
No. Imposter runs in your web browser, so you open the page and play. Players joining an online room only need the code, the link or the QR code.
How many players do you need?
You need at least 3 players. Pass & Play on one phone works for 3 to 20 players, and an online room holds 3 to 16 players, each on their own phone. Only 2 of you? Turn on Surprise mode, where nobody knows how many imposters there are, and sometimes there are none.
Is there a version with questions instead of words?
Yes. In Questions mode everyone secretly answers a question, but the imposter got a slightly different one and doesn't know it. Answer out loud, then the real question is revealed and you look for the answer that doesn't fit. There are 120 question pairs built in.
Does it work without internet?
Pass & Play does. Once the page has loaded on a phone, it keeps working with no signal, which helps on road trips, flights and at places with bad reception. Online rooms need a connection. You can also add the game to your home screen so it opens like an app.
Will we keep getting the same words?
No. The game remembers the words you've played and won't repeat one until you've used up the packs you picked. It also avoids making the same person the imposter round after round, and the imposter never has to give the first clue.
How many imposters should we have?
You can play with 1, 2 or 3 imposters. We suggest 1 imposter for 3 to 6 players, 2 for 7 to 12 players and 3 for 13 or more.
How do we play over Zoom, FaceTime or Discord?
Start your call, then have the host create an online room and share the code or link in the chat. Everyone joins on their own device and sees their role privately. You can say clues out loud on the call or type them in the app.
Can kids play?
Yes. The Kids (Easy Words) pack uses simple words that children aged about 6 to 10 know, and the Picture Words pack shows a big picture with every word, so kids who can't read yet can play too. Turn on Kid-friendly only to hide the grown-up packs. Similar word mode is also a gentle option for young players, because the imposter is not told they are the imposter and nobody has to bluff on purpose.
Can I use my own words?
Yes. Type in a custom word list and the app picks the secret word from it. It is a good way to add inside jokes, class vocabulary or a party theme.
What is similar word mode?
In similar word mode the imposter gets a different word from the same pack instead of no word, and is not told they are the imposter. If the crew has Lion, the imposter might have Tiger. Rounds get sneakier, because even the imposter has to work out what is going on.
How does scoring work?
If the crew accuses an imposter and that imposter fails to guess the secret word, the crew wins and every crewmate scores 1 point. If the crew accuses an innocent player, the vote is a tie, or the caught imposter guesses the word, the imposters win and each one scores 2 points. Scores add up over as many rounds as you like, until you start a new game.
What devices does it work on?
Imposter works in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer. There is nothing to install, so players can mix phones, tablets and laptops in the same online room.
